Robert Gibson was born in Eriswell in 1891 (Mildenhall Q2-1891 4A:815) son of Judd Gathercole and Thirza GIBSON (née SHINN).

1901 census...Aged 9, he was at Flempton Green with his father Judd G GIBSON [44] horsekeeper, born Eriswell; his mother Thirza [44] born Lakenheath; sister Atha [16] born Eriswell, and brother David [7] born Eriswell.

1911 census...Aged 19, farm labourer, he was in Flempton with his parents (now father now recorded as Gathercole J GIBSON) and brother Isaac [23] farm labourer and David (shepherd's page, and John GIBSON, recorded as grandson of Gathercole, born in Flempton but no identification as to parentage. Of 8 siblings, 2 had died.

His younger brother David died in India in 1918. From their Suffolk Regt numbers they must have enlisted the same day see here



He enlisted in Culford .
On the 8th November the battalion were resting in a tobacco factory in Bethune and re-fitting. Apparently within range of the enemy, since 3 were killed.
